The challenges of surviving in a disease-infested, choking jungle are very different from those in a parched desert wasteland or a frozen tundra with a two-month growing season. Different areas have different animals, plants, diseases, temperatures, rainfall, mineral resources, and terrain. You choose whether to land your crash pods in a cold northern tundra, a parched desert flat, a temperate forest, or a steaming equatorial jungle. The game generates a whole planet from pole to equator. Randy Random does crazy stuff, Cassandra Classic goes for rising tension, and Phoebe Chillax likes to relax. There are several storytellers to choose from. Every thunderstorm, pirate raid, and travelling salesman is a card dealt into your story by the AI Storyteller. It works by controlling the “random” events that the world throws at you. In the video, Angelides demonstrates how a CTO (color temperature orange) gel can create a warm lens flare on a cloudy day or illuminate an interior with a sunset-like glow where no sunlight actually existed.įor sample images and more information, check out the full article on the Profoto blog. If the sun is acting as a backlight, you can counter it with a flash in front of your subject – but make sure you use a large light source, like an umbrella or soft box, to soften shadows and mask the directionality of the second light.įake the time of day with colored gels: Too many clouds in the sky? Missed golden hour? With the right gels, you don’t have to worry. The trick for both is to analyze and control the balance of ambient and artificial light sources, and find the right balance of the two for your desired look. When it comes to on-location photography, both indoor and outdoor photography are very similar to work in their specific lighting conditions. Pay attention to the direction of light: Photographers use light from different directions to create dramatic effects all the time, but a photo meant to look like it was shot under available outdoor light won’t look natural if the subject is clearly being lit from two different directions. The Importance of Blending Flash and Ambient Light. If the flash is too bright compared to the surroundings, you may end up with the “deer in the headlights” look. This is helpful even if you’re stuck with an on-camera flash. Here’s what Angelides teaches us:ĭon’t underexpose the ambient light: If your goal is to get an image that looks natural, then leaving in as much of the ambient light as possible will help. While Angelides is working with high-end gear, including a Canon EOS-1D X and two Profoto B1 portable strobes, his technique applies to any type of camera and off-camera lighting. The trick is employing flash photography in such a way so that the viewer doesn’t notice it. That means using off-camera strobes to mimic, balance, or simply replace the sun when necessary. As a lifestyle photographer, Angelides needs to create images that look realistic, even when nature doesn’t give him the weather and lighting he wants. If you find yourself in a dilemma about getting the right balance between flash and ambient light, definitely try this technique out. And the flash on the subject looks the same, however now the ambient light on the subject and background is one stop darker. Photographic lighting company, Profoto, followed photographer Adam Angelides on a commercial assignment at a decommissioned airport in Norwich, England. The change in ISO and flash output cancel each other out. Thomson found out that the charge to mass ratio was so large that the particles either carried a huge charge, or were a thousand times smaller than a hydrogen ion. They were too small to have their mass or charge calculated directly, but he attempted to deduce this from how much the particles were bent by electrical currents, of varying strengths. He decided to try to work out the nature of the particles. Many great scientific discoveries involve performing a series of interconnected experiments, gradually accumulating data and proving a hypothesis. The third experiment was a brilliant piece of scientific deduction and shows how a series of experiments can gradually uncover truths. This result was a major discovery in itself, but Thomson resolved to understand more about the nature of these particles. Halfway down the tube were two electric plates, producing a positive anode and a negative cathode, which he hoped would deflect the rays.Īs he expected, the rays were deflected by the electric charge, proving beyond doubt that the rays were made up of charged particles carrying a negative charge. To prove this hypothesis, he attempted to deflect them with an electric field.Įarlier experiments had failed to back this up, but Thomson thought that the vacuum in the tube was not good enough, and found ways to improve greatly the quality.įor this, he constructed a slightly different cathode ray tube, with a fluorescent coating at one end and a near perfect vacuum. Like all great scientists, he did not stop there, and developed the second stage of the experiment, to prove that the rays carried a negative charge. This proved that the negative charge and the ray were inseparable and intertwined. He found that by applying a magnetic field across the tube, there was no activity recorded by the electrometers and so the charge had been bent away by the magnet. This cylinder had two slits in it, leading to electrometers, which could measure small electric charges. His first experiment was to build a cathode ray tube with a metal cylinder on the end. Thomson had an inkling that the ‘rays’ emitted from the electron gun were inseparable from the latent charge, and decided to try and prove this by using a magnetic field. Thomson constructed some elegant experiments to find a definitive and comprehensive answer about the nature of cathode rays. They debated whether the rays were waves or particles, as they seemed to exhibit some of the properties of both. Physicists knew that the ray carried a negative charge but were not sure whether the charge could be separated from the ray. However, other researchers, notably Crookes, argued that the focused nature of the beam meant that they had to be particles. With more experimentation, researchers found that the ‘cathode rays’ emitted from the cathode could not move around solid objects and so traveled in straight lines, a property of waves. William Crookes discovered that a tube coated in a fluorescing material at the positive end, would produce a focused ‘dot’ when rays from the electron gun hit it. Later and improved cathode ray experiments found that certain types of glass produced a fluorescent glow at the positive end of the tube. This cathode ray also became known as an ‘electron gun’. Physicists in the 19th century found out that if they constructed a glass tube with wires inserted in both ends, and pumped out as much of the air as they could, an electric charge passed across the tube from the wires would create a fluorescent glow. Look at any glowing neon sign or any ‘old-fashioned’ television set, and you are looking at the modern descendants of the cathode ray tube. Even without consciously realizing it, most of us are already aware of what a cathode ray tube is. You can check your dog at baggage so long as it weighs 100 pounds or less. Air CanadaĪir Canada is one of the more accommodating airlines when it comes to flying with large dogs. Some of the better, more cost-effective airlines include Air Canada, Air France, American, Delta, Emirates, Hawaiian, Lufthansa, Sun Country, Swiss International and WestJet. Most airlines will accommodate your pet in one way or another. Which Airlines Allow You to Fly with Large Dogs? If you have a REALLY big dog, he or she will likely need to fly cargo and may need other accommodations as well. Dog Size: There is a difference between big dogs, say Golden Retrievers, and REALLY big dogs like Great Danes.Destination: If you are traveling to a remote destination, or someone that only smaller planes go, flying with a pet may be more expensive.Airline: It should come as no surprise that some airlines charge more than others.National or international: As with ticket costs, flying your pet international is more expensive than domestic flights.Cabin, checking, or cargo: Flying your dog through bag check is usually more expensive than as a carry-on, and cargo is more expensive than the other two options. There are a few factors that impact how much flying with a large canine will cost. This variability is why it’s so important to research or call the airline before you book tickets for your next trip. To fly with a large dog in either bag check or cargo, the cost can range anywhere from $200 to over $1,000. You will pay around $125 each way to fly with a small dog in the cabin. If you want to avoid the chance of your dog getting turned away at the airport, ensure that he or she is in a proper crate, clean, and as calm as possible-more on how to keep your dog calm while traveling later. Your pet must also be free of fleas, ticks, and or infectious diseases. Any younger and dogs are thought to be too fragile for long flights. Many airlines require your pet to be at least 8-weeks old before flying. Yes, you can fly with large dogs so long as they are properly crated and prepared to fly. This is not really something you need to worry about as you and your dog will still end up in the same place. As Cargo: Depending on the size of your canine and the airline you fly with, some may require that large dogs fly as cargo. This means you will bring your dog’s crate to check-in like your other baggage, and he or she will be weighing and transported like the rest of the plane’s bags. As Checked Bags: The majority of airlines allow crated dogs to fly as checked bags.Unfortunately, if you have a large adult dog breed, you will need to make other plans! Dogs usually need to be 20 lbs or less to fly with you inside the plane. As Carry-Ons: Many smaller dog breeds and puppies are allowed to travel in carry-on luggage.Even if you just buy the crate a week in advance and put your dog in it with treats for a few hours a day, that will help tremendously on the day you depart. But, if not, they should at least have some familiarity with spending time in their crate. Ideally, your dog is properly crate trained. If you do not have a crate, you need to give yourself enough time to find and purchase a comfortable crate as well as train him or her not to panic when they are inside their crate. Some airlines provide crates, but most require that you bring your own. Look into the airline you are flying with and figure out if they accommodate large dogs and what their policies are. It’s not something you want to figure out on the fly (pardon the pun) or wait until the day-of to figure out. Understanding the right way to fly with a pet, especially large dogs, requires planning. The Basics of Flying with a Large Dogįlying with your furry friend isn’t as traditional as flying with a child. Whether you are moving, taking a vacation, or going away on business, there are a variety of options for flying with a large dog. But that does not mean you must leave your pet behind (which you want to avoid if you’re travelling alone or moving to a new city). While dog-lovers with smaller breeds can simply slip their furry friends into carry-on luggage, that is not easy to do when you have a Saint Bernard. If you do route yourself via another South American country, however, you may need a vaccination certificate for yellow fever. If you can get yourself to Lima, Santiago, Buenos Aires, or Santa Cruz in Bolivia, the Brazilian no-frills airline Gol has cheap onward fares to Rio and São Paulo. Others routings worth investigating include travelling via Bogotá with Avianca, Panama with Copa Airlines, Lima with LAN Peru and Santiago with LAN Chile. Aerolíneas Argentinas, for instance, flies to Rio and São Paulo from Miami and New York via Buenos Aires. Flights via other countriesįor slightly cheaper fares (but longer flight times), or if you’re tempted to break your journey, it’s worth checking out what the national airlines of Brazil’s South American neighbours have to offer. Even if you have what on paper looks like a direct flight to Rio, make sure that it doesn’t stop at São Paulo on the way, where you will almost always have to deplane and hang around for a weary couple of hours, or even change planes to Rio – take care with TAM on this, since they are ruthless about shunting international passengers onto domestic connections in São Paulo even if your ticket is to Rio. It’s worth going to some trouble to avoid São Paulo’s Guarulhos airport, where queues can be nightmarish and the airport layout is extraordinarily confusing. Excursion fares are around US$1000 out of New York, US$900 out of Miami for unrestricted fares, add at least US$400. Fares to Rio and São Paulo are almost always the same. If your ultimate destination is somewhere other than these cities, it is usually best to connect in Rio or São Paulo.Įxcursion-fare ticket prices vary depending on your length of stay in Brazil: count on spending at least US$150 more for a ticket valid for up to three months than a ticket for up to one month. Most flights go to either Rio or São Paulo if you want to fly anywhere else, your options are limited to TAM from Miami to Manaus, Belém, Recife, Belo Horizonte and Salvador American, also from Miami, to Belo Horizonte and Delta from Atlanta to Fortaleza, Manaus and Recife, although Copa will fly you to Manaus via Panama if you want to focus your trip on the Amazon. TAM is the only Brazilian carrier serving the US at present, while the North American airlines are American, Air Canada, Continental, Delta and United Japan Airlines and Korean Air also carry passengers between the US and Brazil. There are numerous gateways to Brazil in the US and Canada direct flights leave from Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, Newark, New York, Orlando, Washington and Toronto. For more information, see Getting around for details of the various options. Depending on your itinerary, it can save you a lot of money, but can only be bought outside South America. If you plan to do a fair amount of travelling within Brazil, think about buying a TAM air pass with your main ticket, available whether or not you fly your international legs on TAM – though the price will be higher if you arrive with a different airline. Apart from discounted tickets, it’s worth checking fares directly with the airlines that fly to Brazil they frequently offer competitive fares, especially during low season, although these may carry certain restrictions such as having to spend at least seven days abroad (maximum stay three months). The internet is rapidly making specialist travel agents less of an essential first stop, but you may want to use one if you prefer to book your first few days’ accommodation before you arrive or you’re looking for a tailor-made package. Double-sided Fabric OrnamentsĪlternatively, if you’d like to stitch them onto regular Aida or linen, they will work fine there too! They will be about the same size (assuming that you go with 14 count fabric), and will make for a lovely wee charm on the tree. I’d recommend a white, or Christmas-y colours such as red or green. Use whatever colour you think might look best. Stitch through and over that last layer of exposed plastic on both pieces at once to cover it up completely. Once trimmed, you can hold the two sides together with stitched sides facing out. Once you’ve stitched the two sides, you will need to trim down the plastic/cardboard so there’s one layer of exposed plastic outside all of the cross stitches (as in the image above). If you like the look of them being double-sided, flip the design around for a second stitch and repeat. I will probably do that and add a few accents in a metallic/diamante thread. I will be finishing them off with felt on the back, and embroidering names into the back with some cursive chain stitch. can anybody spot my missed stitch…Īren’t they cute! OMG. Here is an example of the ones I’ve made so far – I am still stitching the purple and blue baubles to finish the set: ps. They’re just the right size to hang from your tree, in a window, or from your rear view mirror! They’ve been designed to be stitched onto a perforated plastic canvas, or perforated thick card if you’d like to give that a try. That would be 2-3 inches for you imperials out there. In the spirit of running out of craft supplies, our free Cross Stitch Pattern will test some of your stock! A collection of five cute wee ornaments fit for the tree, approximately 7-8cm square. We’ve been in a pretty strict lockdown since August, so any kind of Christmas shopping has been impossible! It has made Christmas Crafting heaps easier though, assuming one doesn’t run out of craft supplies… December Free Pattern Happy December everyone! It’s December 1st so I will be posting up our December Free Cross Stitch Pattern today, and omg Christmas has definitely crept up on us this year. Traditionally, Germany did not have a lot of short-cooked meats. Germany today is made up of 16 states, each with favorite breads, pastries, meats, hundreds of kinds of sausages and cold cuts. Fritters, cookies and pastries with fruit toppings are popular.Īsked about food in today's Germany, Guggenmos said it is hard to generalize, because of regional differences. Guggenmos says that the process of pickling cabbage was developed by the Chinese and brought to Germany by the Mongols in the 13th century.ĭesserts often include fruit, most commonly apples, grapes, pineapple, plums or bananas. Cabbage, kohlrabi and root vegetables - turnips, parsnips, celeriac - are staples.Īnd of course there's sauerkraut. Potatoes became common in the 18th century, when King Frederick the Great distributed free seeds. Year round, Germans traditionally enjoy sturdy fare: dumplings, potato salad, many kinds of rye and wheat breads, and thick hearty soups. The main beer of Oktoberfest is Marzenbier, characterized by its dark color and robust flavor. Over 10 million visitors a year flock to Munich for the 16-day festivities. Oktoberfest started as celebration of the wedding of the crown prince of Bavaria, and grew over the years. And most beer in Bavaria is consumed outside. The lid on a beer stein, he explains, has two purposes. "I seldom drink beer," Guggenmos said, "but if I do, it's Brauerei." His cousin married the owner of Hirsch Brauerei, a brewery in the Bavarian Alps. One tent had a whole ox on a spit, just like in olden days." You'll see a battery of 100 fish on a pole, veal legs, whole chickens on spits. "They cook whole fish, mackerel or herring, on sticks over wood-fire coals. "Most of the food is cooked on rotisseries," Guggenmos said. Whole roast pig is grilled on the spit and served with its crisp outer coating and moist, juicy meat. In Germany, a land of meat and potatoes, pork is the favored meat.Īs Guggenmos cooked for photographs last week at J&W, he spoke of the street food of Oktoberfest, from sausages to sauerkraut. Among his favorites are piquant warm potato salad, tender roll-ups of steak with a creamy sauce, and spaetzle - golden free-form nuggets made of fresh egg noodle dough.Īnother time he might have a pork roast, or bake a whole cabbage stuffed with meatloaf for himself and his American-born wife, Debbie. He moves in the world of fine cuisine, but once a month, chef Guggenmos cooks an old-fashioned Bavarian meal at home. This fall, Guggenmos was named dean of the College of Culinary Arts at Johnson & Wales University in Providence, after heading the culinary division at J&W in Charleston, S.C. Karl Guggenmos of western Cranston, who grew up in Augsburg, Bavaria (about 60 miles west of Munich), describes the feasting and frolicking, the gigantic beer halls set up under tents, brass bands of 80 or more musicians, and fairground attractions - Ferris wheels, roller coasters and merry-go-rounds. Oktoberfest, that exuberant festival of oom-pah music, beer and food, began nearly 2,000 years ago in Munich, Germany. Environments themselves are bland and dreary, and while I understand that it thematically fits in with the overall artistic design, it would’ve been nice to get some variation to break up the monotony that no doubt sets in very quickly. On the graphical side of things, Shadwen is a pretty average looking game. It’s a shame that a game with so many interesting elements never really pushes itself or the player. There’s also a number of traps and tools that you can craft, but I probably only ever used them once or twice and it’s not because they’re particularly uninteresting, but the levels are just so dull and repetitive and combined with the basic (and sometimes broken) enemy AI, there was never a need push myself and get creative with the tools at hand. You have a grappling hook which you can use to get to higher ground, swing between platforms and attach it to various distant objects to distract guards, but it was never satisfying to use as it felt really loose and it almost always resulted in weird in-game physics behaviour. Not only was the good ending completely and utterly disappointing for the effort I put in to get it, but the game also gives you numerous gadgets that provides little to no pay-off. In fact, this sentiment permeated throughout my entire playthrough. Unfortunately, the pay-off for playing this way just wasn’t worth it. I found this to be a really unique way to handle the story and it made me think twice before acting. So you can either go the entire game without killing anyone, or you can try and do it in a way that Lily won’t witness it. Where it becomes difficult is that when you kill a guard in front of her or she sees a dead body, it’ll negatively impact your relationship and that will ultimately affect the ending. All you have to do is create a safe path for Lily and she’ll do the rest. Its immersion breaking, sure, but it beats having to worry about an AI controlled character messing up. Lily, who tags along throughout the game, is a sort of invisible second character that can’t really be seen even if she’s standing right next to a guard. Now, before you run for the hills I should also make mention that this is not your standard escort mission scenario where you have to tell the other character to hide in a garbage bin so that the crazy infected villagers don’t find them. Now, this does make things incredibly easy as well, but the difficulty ties in with the fact that the game is one big escort mission. Sure, it seems cheap at first, but I appreciated the pacing it provides and it allowed me to try out different tactics without the fear that I would have to restart the entire level. You can leisurely scout out enemies while time is frozen and should you make a mistake you can instantly rewind time. In Shadwen however, all of that is thrown out of the window. It can be stressful at times, especially when a tiny mistake can ruin everything. You formulate a plan of action, scout the area and execute as stealthily as you possibly can. Stealth games usually require a level of finesse and foresight from the player. It’s an odd inclusion for this kind of game as it completely destroys any stress that usually accompanies the stealth genre, but it’s not necessarily a bad thing. The second big mechanic is the ability to rewind time at will without any usage cap. You’ll still have the ability to control the camera, which allows you to easily plan your next move. Firstly, time will only move when you move, meaning that if you’re not actively controlling Shadwen then time will be completely frozen. The goal for each level never really changes, but how you accomplish your objective is where the game’s two most notable features come in to play. At its core, it’s a stealth game in which you have to get from point A to B without getting seen. Shadwen is an interesting blend of different mechanics. The story is also affected by your actions, but I’ll touch on that a bit later on. It’s far from engaging, but it gets the job done in terms of providing some basic character and world building. During the loading screen between levels, the two will chat to each other and you get to learn more about each character’s backstory. The two cross paths early on in the game and Lily decides to accompany Shadwen even though she is on a dangerous mission to assassinate a king. The story revolves around two characters, the assassin Shadwen and a little orphan named Lily. From the onset, this game seems to have carried over a lot of Trine’s quirkiness and penchant for physics based activities, unfortunately, I wished it carried it over Trine’s ability to be a good game. I was interested to see how they would transition from an action puzzle platformer to a stealth game. Shadwen was created by the same folks that gave us Trine which was a sort of spiritual successor to The Lost Vikings.
